Hastings Street, the backbone of Black Bottom, started at Atwater, on the Detroit River.
Now, there is no street sign, and the street is called Schweizer.

In the 1930's Hastings Street and Paradise Valley were the only areas in the city where blacks
were allowed to own businesses. Consequently, they became the entertainment districts of
Detroit. In the 50's jazz musicians would come here to see if they were any good.
