    JAM WHILE U SURF:
In the 1930's the Near East Side Ghetto, as it was called, was the only place where blacks were allowed to own businesses. The close knit community blossumed into a hopping entertainment district. When Duke Ellington and the other black bands came to Michigan, they might be playing in Flint or Grand Rapids, but after the show the bus brought them back here because they were'nt allowed to stay in any of the white hotels. Musicians being musicians, they would congregate at the Band Box and Rhythm Club and jam sometimes until 11 am. Jam city! Young jazz musicians would come to Detroit to find find out if they were any good.
